Cybersecurity in telecom: what it involves

Cybersecurity in telecom is about protecting the networks that keep digital society running, from 5G core networks to IoT connectivity. Providers of public electronic communications networks and services are listed in NIS2 Annex I, implemented in the Netherlands through the Cyberbeveiligingswet (Cbw), and the Dutch Telecommunications Act and the GDPR apply as well. The 5G rollout expands the attack surface. The main threats are attacks on 5G core networks and edge nodes, vulnerabilities in signalling protocols such as SS7 and Diameter, supply chain risks via network components and DDoS attacks on telecom infrastructure. Telecom operators therefore mainly hire network security engineers with 5G and telecom experience, CISOs who know the sector, OT/ICS security specialists for telecom infrastructure and GRC and NIS2 compliance consultants who translate regulation into measures in the network.

Frequently asked questions

Dutch telecom operators fall under the Cyberbeveiligingswet (Cbw), the Dutch implementation of NIS2, because providers of public electronic communications networks and services are listed in NIS2 Annex I. The Dutch Telecommunications Act and the GDPR also apply. Under the Cbw, operators have a duty of care and a duty to report significant incidents, and the board is ultimately responsible for managing cyber risk.

A telecom company mainly needs network security engineers with experience in 5G core networks and signalling protocols such as SS7 and Diameter. A CISO with telecom experience, OT/ICS security specialists for the physical telecom infrastructure and GRC and NIS2 compliance consultants are also important. Because network components from suppliers are a supply chain risk, supplier assessment needs attention too.

MVPeople Group responds to every request within 4 hours and, for interim assignments, often presents a first profile within 4 hours, with introduction CVs within 24 hours. Candidates come from a network of more than 7,000 pre-screened cybersecurity professionals, including network security engineers and GRC consultants. MVPeople is NEN-4400-1 certified, WAADI registered and works DBA-proof.

Interim fits projects such as securing a 5G rollout, a NIS2 gap analysis or an audit of supplier network components. Permanent hiring fits day-to-day operation and monitoring of the network, where deep knowledge of the operator's own infrastructure is needed. Many operators combine interim specialists for projects with a permanent core team. Permanent hiring through MVPermanent typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.
