A BIA is the foundation of every BCM programme. It identifies which business processes are critical, what the maximum tolerable downtime is, which resources are needed for recovery and what the financial and operational impact of disruptions is. The most commonly used frameworks are ISO 22301 (the international standard for BCM), the BCI Good Practice Guidelines, NIST SP 800-34 for IT continuity planning and the Dutch NEN-EN-ISO 22301. Many organisations in the financial sector must also comply with specific requirements from regulators such as DNB and the ECB regarding operational resilience.
Best practice prescribes that continuity plans are tested at least annually, but critical plans and DR procedures are ideally exercised more frequently. Tests range from tabletop exercises and walkthroughs to full simulations. After each test, improvement points are identified and implemented. Regular testing increases confidence in the plans and staff preparedness.
